Collect/Project, a transatlantic ensemble comprised of two German (Frauke Aulbert, voice; Eva Zöllner, accordion) and two American artists (Shanna Gutierrez, flute; Francisco Castillo Trigueros, electronics), proposes a comprehensive cultural exchange of contemporary art music to build connections between the US and Germany through a tour of concerts, educational events, and community engagement, with a focus on freedom to create art anywhere, the diversity of creators, performers, and experiences of music.
Elastic Arts invites you to Zoetic, a celebration of visual, aural, and botanic art! Born out of friendship and the ways they have inspired each other, the evening is a collaboration between musical group Black Diamond, visual artist Marine Tempels, and founder of plant shop Ebimera Vines Nyabweza Itaagi.
Curated by Angel Bat Dawid, Mothership9 is a monthly series of creative music concerts, education and community participatory events of diverse styles approaches and genres with the purpose of building a sonic mythological spaceship to the cosmos. This series will explore the connection between space, cosmos, mythology and its relation to Chicago’s deep history and tradition of creative music as a valid construct for empowerment, healing and solidarity.
RGB operates within the great tradition of Chicago groove-based improvised music. Comprised of Paul Giallorenzo on keyboards, Charlie Kirchen on bass, and Ryan Packard on drums, the group’s improvisations are built around dark and hypnotic grooves that evolve through a series of almost microscopic shifts in the material. This performance is part of a midwestern tour commemorating the release of the group’s first album. For the opening set, Danish vocalist Randi P makes her Chicago debut.
Asheville-based guitarist Shane Parish makes a long overdue return to the Elastic Arts stage for a set of solo music, and Chicago percussionist Emerson Hunton presents this trio collaboration featuring Boston-based pianist Eric Krouse and electronic improviser/composer Ted Moore. Using live processing, feedback, modular synthesis, and acoustic instruments, the trio presents improvisations ranging from stark minimalism to frenetic density. The trio’s first meeting was in May of 2018 at the University of Chicago, where a recording was made.
Join visual artist Marine Tempels and founder of plant shop Ebimera Vines, Nyabweza Itaagi, for a conversation around environmental stewardship, food justice and art. Tempels’s visual arts exhibition, Lost Effect Cause Found features plants by Itaagi; in this context the two will guide a conversation and reflection on envisioning the future in a world with rapidly changing climates. No prior knowledge needed. Come imagine a radically different future together.
Celebrating over ten years of collaborating together, Berlin saxophonist/composer, Gebhard Ullmann and NYC trombonist/composer Steve Swell join two of Chicago's finest improvising musicians; Fred Lonberg-Holm, cello/electronics and percussionist Michael Zerang for this new configuration. Building on the strength and ideals of those three cities the quartet creates enough fireworks to light up the night sky with their brilliant sound imagery. Ullmann/Swell's Chicago Plan thoroughly breaks new ground for what Jazz and New Music ensembles' approach to what creative music should be.
The 2019 Exposure Series follows in the path of 2018's event, bringing three underknown improvisers to Chicago to forge new relationships with Chicago audiences and artists. This year's event will feature Claire Rousay on percussion (San Antonio), Ava Mendoza on guitar (Brooklyn), and Forbes Graham on trumpet (Boston).
